Review: I am in love with this book. My only issue is that it was too short! But it was so brilliant. It’s my first ever Skye Kilaen book and I am for sure going to read more and enjoy every bit of her stories that I can.

Get It Right follows Finn and Vivi and their slow burn romance. They meet while Finn’s an inmate in prison and Vivi is the prison nurse and while it’s unsaid, the feelings are there. There’s subtle flirting and there’s hints of things maybe happening. But then one day, Vivi doesn’t show up to work anymore and Finn’s torn up about it. She’s finally released from prison and is slowly making her way through the big bad world, when she runs into Vivi again and all those feelings come gushing out again and completely mess her up, because she doesn’t know what all of this means.

The book is told in third person, but exclusively from Finn’s point of view. So you go through the pain and motions with her. Through the chronic migraines, the getting out of prison and adjusting to life outside and finding a job. And finding the woman you love, of course. Finn’s an incredible character and because we get so much of her, you get to also enjoy all that she has to offer. I don’t think I’ve ever read an ex-con storyline that is so wholesome. Finn’s motives and why she got locked away are so unlike what you’d imagine, plus, Finn is just generally a really likeable character so you want her to be forgiven and her past to be forgotten.

The leads are a butch lesbian and pansexual and they have different lifestyles, different body shapes and different cultures running through their veins. These are not their defining features and not something that has to be addressed, but it just fits into the story that is being told. I love that everything just flows so seamlessly and how intricately carved these characters are. You might not get a lot about Vivi, because you only see her through Finn’s eyes, but that love gives you a lot to work with and you can’t help but want to wrap them both up in your arms.

Oh, and the chemistry. The book is fluffy and cute for the most part, but Finn and Vivi have such incredible chemistry. They go from being cautious around each other to peeling off clothes and it’s absolutely brilliant. Their relationship is not anything unique or exceptional, but it’s beautiful, especially when you realise how and where things started to build and how they’re handling things now.

One of the things that I loved about the book was tackling Finn’s chronic migraines. Romance often features characters with illnesses or family members with illnesses that could be life threatening, but to see a character with migraines and then getting first hand knowledge of how that affects their lives is pretty great. As someone who suffers from migraines, I could totally empathise with Finn and it feels so real to understand how she suffers and struggles through it every single day.

I haven’t read a lot of LBTGIA+ books this year, but the ones I have read have left me wanting more! Through Finn and Vivi’s story, we’re introduced to a group of characters that are definitely going to get their day in the sun. Get It Right is a sex positive, fluffy, cute and realistic romance that you need in your life. It’s a story that is not often told and one that I think deserves all of the love!
